Prince Turki Alfaisal Receives a Delegation of The Elders

Date: March 1, 2018

His Royal Highness Prince Turki Alfaisal, Chairman of the King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies, received at his office in Riyadh on Wednesday, February 28th 2017, a delegation of The Elders, an independent group of global leaders. They reviewed the group’s efforts in strengthening world peace and stability.

The delegation was led by Kofi Annan, former UN secretary-general and chair of The Elders. He was accompanied by former Finnish president Martti Ahtisaari, former Algerian foreign minister, UN diplomat Lakhdar Brahimi, former President of Mexico Ernesto Zedillo, and Chief Executive Officer of The Elders David Nussbaum.

The Elders is an international non-governmental organization of public figures noted as elder statesmen and peace activists, who were brought together by Nelson Mandela in 2007. They describe themselves as "independent global leaders working together for peace and human rights." The goal Mandela set for the Elders was to use their "almost 1,000 years of collective experience" to work on solutions for seemingly insurmountable problems, such as climate change, HIV/AIDS, and poverty, as well as to "use their political independence to help resolve some of the world's most intractable conflicts."
